What is this feeling? I am well rested. I have no more sore-spots on my feet… but there is a gaping hole in my heart where times spent dancing Zouk into the wee hours of the morning used to be…
Forgive me Zouk powers. It has been two weeks since my last Zouk congress.
Last month I doubled my congress attendance: I went from my first experience in Prague during March to my second with Casa do Zouk on the Gold Coast last month. I know I am lucky I to be in the position to attend the congresses I have. I am not ungrateful that I had such amazing experiences and dances at both of them. But I need my next fix of Zouk congress.
I
am
a
Zouk-a-holic.
I am addicted to dancing with new people (even though it sometimes takes me a bit to feel confident enough to do so). I miss the music, the vibe, the new moves, the challenge. So I am trying to figure out a post congress survival guide to ensure that I last until my next Zouk congress fix… which is four months away tomorrow. 122 days. 2,928 hours. I don’t even want to THINK how many minutes. Urrrgh!
Here is what I have so far for my post congress survival guide:
Listen to Zouk. All the time. In the shower, in the kitchen, in the car. When a Zouk-able song comes on over the radio (or off in the distance) – tap the beat out with your thumbs and add a teeny tiny body roll in there. Or a snake. Or both.
Squeeze Zouk in wherever you can. Go to socials and classes. Hunt someone down that attended the same congress: if you are a follow, ask if they remember the moves you were taught and see if you can both do them still. If you are a lead: try those new moves out!!
Learn a routine. International Zouk Day Flashmob is coming up (16 September) so there are opportunities for everyone – no matter your skill level (or country) – to learn a Zouk routine! (Canberra peeps- Kmotion studio is running it again this year and it isn’t too late to join in! Click here for details).
Relive the experience. Replay the Zouk demos that you conscientiously recorded at the end of the workshops. Copy the styling into your social dances.
Look to the future. Most importantly – start planning your next congress! Mine is the Sydney International Zouk Festival in December, but I am working out a Zouk trip to Thailand in January… and potentially a month in Rio in July for a 30 day Zouk immersion course… plus a week either side of that for Xandy’s workshop in Spain if he runs it again…
